ALPHA NU'S HISTORY
The following historical notes come from the Kappa Alpha Order National Archives, and were provided as part of their expansion presentation and materials in September of 2005.
"The Washington Alumni Chapter was first organizaed on November 28, 1893, at 907 G. Street, Northwest, and a charter was issued by the Knight Commander, December 28, 1893."
"On November 1, 1894 after the alumni group had been in existence for a year... it was decided to petition the Knight Commander for a charter to establish a new chapter at then Columbian University and a committee was appointed."
"Upon the request of the Washington Alumni group, the Knight Commander issued a charter on November 18, 1894, for the establishment of an active chapter at Columbian College. Four days later, on November 22, 1894, at 465 Louisiana Avaenue, Northwest, (Millan's Law Offices) the four charter members selected by the alumni committee - all residents of Washington - were duly obligated as members of the fraternity. You will particularly note there was no formal initiation at that time."
"On November 24, 1894, a formal initiation was presented in Rooms 20 and 21 of Wormley's Hotel, when Alfredo Victor GAna, son of the Chilean Ambassador to the United States, and Charles Lieberman Parker of Washington were taken into the new chapter. There were present at the time Samuel Zenas Ammen, Knight Commander (and author of the ritual), and he rendered invaluable service in the ritualistic work."
"In 1924, John Edgar Hoover, former Number I (president of the undergraduate chapter) of Alpha Nu chapter in 1916-917, was appointed Director of the newly created Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Department of Justice by Attorney General Stone."
"In 1932, under the direction of two Kappa Alphas, Ted Rinehart (Alpha Nu) and Louis Malkus, the university band was formed and a carnival was held on campus to obtain money for uniforms."
(The Wormley Hotel (formerly at 1500 H Street, NW) no longer exists. Union Trust Company was built at the spot where the hotel was demolished. Take note that SAMUEL ZENAS AMMEN, the author of our ritual and our practical founder, administered the ritual as the Knight Commander of K.A.. November 18, 1894 is our original chartering date.)
